My father was – most of all in his life – a soldier of fortune, fighting for different nations in up to 13 military conflicts, including the Indian Wars in Oklahoma, the Spanish-American War, and the Philippine Insurrection. Those assignments were during his three enlistments in the U.S. Army. He also fought for the Canadian Army, Princess Pats regiment, in World War II.

In addition, it looks like his military ventures took him to a civil war in Chile, the Boxer Rebellion in China, the 1910 Mexican revolution, and combat against the Ottoman Empire just before World War I.

Of particular interest are his Italian roots and military service. Born in Venice in 1873, that’s where he later embarked with the Alpini to fight for Italy in the first Italo-Turkish War. He also fought for Italy in the subsequent 1912 Balkan War.

This newly published book – Lover, Soldier, Reprobate – tracks my father’s life, starting in Italy, shanghaied on the way to America, and adventuring around the world. The entire saga represents a tour de force in genealogy, revealing his ancestral roots back to the 1300s in Italy, his wives around the world, and his children – two of us surviving, in the United States and Italy. Once alone in the world, now we have family all over, especially in the United States and Canada – thanks to genealogical research.

I have been able to trace his family back in Italy to Trento, and that family from Como in the 1300s, with a branch that split off to Bari in the 1400s.

There is so much to tell that it all became a 500-page book, with over 100 illustrations, including photos passed on down of my grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, and the newly discovered relatives.

Lover Soldier Reprobate An International Odyssey of War and Family eBook Alexander DeVolpi

Retired nuclear physicist Dr. Alexander DeVolpi has completed a successful career as a scientist with impressive credentials in the areas of reactor instrumentation and safety research, experimental diagnostics, and specialized technology at Argonne National Laboratory, near Chicago, Illinois and in developing instruments for nuclear applications, as well as retaining an abiding interest in the safe and durable operation of reactors. He also happens to have a degree in journalism - a factor which may have encouraged him to take on the field of non-scientific writing evident here in LOVER, SOLDIER, REPROBATE, an homage and warm biography about his fascinating father's adventurous life.

Dr. Volpi has taken a unique approach in approaching the biography of his colorful father. He opens his book in a conversational manner in a pub with a book reader, a writer and an author (Volpi) - a writing style that allows the facts of the book to be related as answers to questions by some near incredulous spectators! The reason this works so well is the fact that it makes the implausible life of Volpi's father credible, dismissing the stale rumors other biographers use at times with documented facts related in a story form. Bonaventura Paulo Carlo Alessandro Weiss Volpi (Alessandro Volpi) was born in Venice, Italy June 5, 1873, his ancestral tracing back to the 1300s in Italy. Beginning his soldier of fortune career in the Italo-Turkish War 1911-1912, he immigrated to the US, and subsequently served as a soldier in conflicts in the Indian Wars in Oklahoma, the Spanish American War, participated in the charge up the Cuban San Juan Hill under Theodore Rossevelt, the Philippine Insurrection, the civil war in Chile, the Boxer Rebellion in China, the1910 Mexican revolution, the conflict against the Ottoman Empire, World Wars I and II, as a Cossack for Tsar Alexander of Russia - his life in many ways was an encyclopedia of military conflicts around the globe. And yet the plethora of events does not stop with his military prowess but also extends into his multiple wives (+/- 4). Many global descendants (+/- 8) from trysts around the globe carry his bloodline, but it is the family traced in the US that supplies Dr. Volpi with the richest selection of memories.

In portions of the book the author provides diversions in his conversations about global warming (?human instigated, sun related, nature oriented?) and nuclear arms control - offering enough of his personal history to bring his father's fame into focus. There are many fine photographs of the cast of characters of the book, scenes from wars, images of important documents - each adding credibility to what seems to be an astonishing story of Alessandro Volpi. For readers who love history, especially military history and the derring-do of a `lover, soldier, reprobate' that deserves a cinematic version, this warm and richly detailed book will satisfy. For those whose sophistication in literature demands a writing skill of a literary style, relax, and let the spontaneous madness of this story simply entertain. For a lengthy book it reads rapidly. Lover Soldier Reprobate An International Odyssey of War and Family eBook Alexander DeVolpi Reviews

This is a truly interesting story. You can tell how much this man was loved and admired for his duties and service to many countries. It seems this man spent majority of his life at war, but still means the world to his family.
I’m sure I’m not the only who is wondering why the author spent so much time researching and looking into his father’s military life, when his father wasn’t even around. I get the honor and respect, maybe that’s all he had to hold on to. I enjoyed this book because I’ve never known anyone in war, so this was a new outlook for me.
This man was all over the place, and as the author said he now has family all over I would say that is something to be happy about. Your father’s courage and bravery changed not only your life but many others.
Lover, Soldier, Reprobate is a self-published memoir, but not of deVolpi's own life--here he assembles and recounts the incredible tale of his soldier father who fought everyone and everywhere from the Indian Wars in Oklahoma to the Boxer Rebellion in China! His father lived a remarkable life and was present at and a participant in some of the turning points of American and world history.

The author begins the tale with a non-traditional prologue--a conversation in a pub. Through questions and answers, he reveals the immensely interesting background of his father, and what he went through to find out about the enigmatic (and mostly absent) man. The rest of the memoir is also unorthodox in style. Mostly sequentially, deVolpi relates his father's adventures, including pictures of objects and papers that document and prove his father was actually doing these things. Overall, it's a fascinating historical document, but one perhaps better served by stronger writing - it feels like a collection of moments and images, but all slightly at a distance, which could have been broached with a different style. Still, it is well worth reading, and the author's own knowledge and understanding of historical events and their force and influence is breathtaking and gives context (and makes sense of) his father's zigzagging through battlefields across the world. It also proves that our own families are often fascinating if we just take the time to find out.
